The Oldsmar Declaration of Independence to improve Adolescent Mental Health

In the spirit of our nation’s founding documents, we, the youth of Oldsmar, on this approach to the Fourth of July, do hereby affirm our commitment to the principles of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, as enshrined in the United States Declaration of Independence.

Whereas the original Declaration emphasized these unalienable rights endowed by our Creator, we recognize that the interpretation of these rights must evolve with our generation.

Whereas happiness is not solely derived from material wealth, but encompasses mental and emotional well-being, meaningful relationships, purposeful engagement, and personal growth.

Whereas the pursuit of happiness is a dynamic journey of self-discovery, resilience-building, goal setting, and quality of life enhancement.

We declare the following truths to be self-evident:

LIFE - Survive: Every adolescent has the inherent right to exist and be free from physical, mental, and emotional harm.

LIBERTY - Thrive: Every adolescent shall have the freedom to make informed choices, to live a life unburdened by undue restrictions, and to navigate the path to adulthood with autonomy.

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS - Soar: Every adolescent shall have the opportunity to seek personal fulfillment, to engage in activities that promote well-being, and to strive for a future that aligns with their aspirations.

We pledge to prioritize our mental health as a cornerstone of achieving happiness. We call upon our community to support us in creating educational environments that nurture independence, foster good decision-making, and celebrate the journey towards happiness.

As we commemorate Independence Day, let us also embrace the ongoing quest for a life filled with joy, purpose, and well-being. Let this declaration serve as a testament to our commitment to the mental health of all adolescents in Oldsmar and beyond.

Adopted this 14th day of June, 2024, by the youth of Oldsmar, Florida.

This declaration is a creative representation of the values and aspirations of the youth in Oldsmar, emphasizing the importance of mental health and well-being in the pursuit of happiness. It is inspired by the historical significance of the United States Declaration of Independence and the Mission Impact Units of OJV intended to reflect the contemporary concerns and goals of today’s generation.
